year only in date

i have a date field on mysql. i would like to be able to output "only the year" on the result's page of my queries. is that possible? how? thanks.

can't find it there!

my field "NATDAT" contains the birthday in this format e.g. 1939-01-20 (yyyy-mm-dd). how do i echo or print it to appear as 1939 or even '39 only? thanks.

I'm afraid you need some practice in RTFMing.

YEAR(date)
Returns the year for date, in the range 1000 to 9999:
mysql> SELECT YEAR('98-02-03');
-> 1998

As most of mysql date functions, it's rather permitting about format.

i tried this

echo " . "<font face=Verdana size=1 color=#000000>". "from". " " . $row[YEAR('NATDAT1')]";

and it gave me this result:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: year() in /var/etc/etc/etc/etc//my.php on line 106

line 106 is the above code! could someone help! i am trying to output the year only on the field "NATDAT1" which is a date field.

It's MySQL function, not PHP. So you should call it inside of a query, not in a script.

"SELECT year(my_date) FROM my_table"

Or half a dozen of other ways.

i have tried several times, several ways but no luck!

here is my echo part:

{$row['NATDAT']}

this outputs something like, 1940-01-20

is there a way in php that will output it as 1940 only or '40?

i have tried substring,

substring ({$row['NATDAT']}), 0,4

but this gives me an error, help!

If your field is a date/timestamp field, you should really be doing this using mysql as the Igel suggested. But if you want to get the first four characters of that, use

echo substr($row['NATDAT'], 0,4);

The function you were looking for is substr(), not substring.

it will not work still!

it is giving me this error:

Parse error: parse error, expecting T_STRING' orT_VARIABLE' or `T_NUM_STRING'

i will explain more. i have an sql querry that asks for tells the database to fetch from the field NATDAT which contains the bdays, all who have their bdays today (current day). my querry is like this:

$result = mysql_query ("SELECT * FROM mytable

WHERE substring(NATDAT,6) = substring(curdate(),6)

ORDER BY CNOMEN ASC, NOMRL
",$conn);

then i echo it this way:

echo "<table bgcolor=#FFFEEF border=0 cellpadding=1 cellspacing=0 style=border-collapse: collapse bordercolor=#111111 width=100%>";
echo "<font face=Verdana size=1 color=#800000><li>{$row['NOMRL']} </b> {$row['CNOMEN']}</font></li></table>";

so it prints NOMRL which is the name and CNOMEN which is the surname. what i want to add after the CNOMEN is the year from the NATDAT field which contains the bday field in this format eg. 1972-01-21. i tried using substr in several ways but no luck! help still!
