\n doesn't work

Hello. I'm just an beginner. So:

When I use \n when I want a text to pe placed in new line, I receive message:

FIRST MESSAGE:
Warning: Unexpected character in input: '\' (ASCII=92) state=1 in C:\Apache\Apache2\htdocs\7.php on line 5

AND THEN:
Notice: Use of undefined constant n - assumed 'n' in C:\Apache\Apache2\htdocs\7.php on line 5

How else do I put text in a new line? Or I need some preconfiguration of php so that \n will work?

My configuration is:
PHP 4.2.3
Apache 2.0.43
all that on W2K Pro

I must confess I don't know why you are getting this error, but it may be due to a syntax error.

Example:

<?
echo "Jump\nJump!";
?>

Must print:

Jump
Jump!

<?
echo "jump";
\n
echo "jump!";
?>

Must crash and send an error.

If this is not the cause, you could always use 'natural' carriage returns:

<?
echo "Jump
Jump!";
?>

Must print

Jump
Jump

But, still it doesn't work. Yap, I have no syntax problems, for example:

<?php
echo "Jump\nJump!";
?>

Gives me:

Jump Jump!

And also, "normal" brake of line doesn't seem to work. Must say, I use php.exe (not sapi). Maybe there lies a problem?

Or perhaps my Internet Explorer (IE 5.0) isn't configured properely?

And, Apache is configured normaly (I haven't changed a lot since installation).

Anyhow, thx. I'll also try to find solution somewhere else.

I'm having a similar problem... I have PHP 4.3.0 installed, and now when I use this code:

echo '1\n2';

then this is what comes up on the screen: 1\n2
is this something that has been changed in the newest version, or what, since it was working fine before...

If you are echoing this info to a web page \n does nothing try .

Dbertovi, we really need to see your script so we can tell what's causing the error.

And rIkLuNd, \n never works between ' ' quotes, only " " quotes.

Someone asked to see my code - here it is (a simpliest example that can be):

<?php
echo "Jump\nJump!";
?>

gives me:

Jump Jump!

in one single line.

???
I also tried another ways of writting it down, nothing changes.

from my understanding of \n it is used to tell php that a newline is there for code purposes, every example i have seen used, there is usually a before of after the \n, and the reasoning is that php is actually writing html, and \n isn't html, catch my drift, use 's if you want a break

i might have the wrong end of the stick here, but this follows on from the last post slightly. If you use \n, it doesnt put a line break in as displayed on the web page. It will however, insert a break in the HTML code so that you can read it more easily.

If you want a line break on the page (when viewed through internet explorer) then you'll have to use a HTML code like or (the latter if it's just a line break). The \n simply breaks the CODE (you can see it if you do a view source on your page - without the \n then you'd get one long line, with the \n you should see effectively a return in place of the \n).

Now that might be teaching you to suck eggs, but it suddenly occurred to me that you might have the wrong end of the stick as to what the \n code was used for...
