accessing mysql from apache/php

how do i configure my mySQL working from accessing PHP

i configure all the packages from installations select them individual and i have change the password for the mySQL but eventually i still cant access my database i even put it in startup so that it will start the program upon boot up...

so is there anybody can help me how to configure it..

my friend told me to configure it individual like install the packages from tar.gz

like install the mySQL first then apache and php...

but is there any other way so that i might not going to uninstall all the packages i installed from installation of linux..

by the way my RH version is 8.

You need to install MySQL and then compile PHP with the "--with-mysql" option for PHP's mysql functions to work correctly.

the problem with this is on how to compile the PHP again.. i just installed it via RPM so is there a way that i can still compile my PHP?

You could uninstall the RPM and download the PHP (4.3.0) and Apache (1.3) source files.

If you didn't already know, to uninstall the RPM first do a "rpm -q php", the do "rpm -e PHP-ver.num" (where 'ver.num' is the PHP version that you found with the "rpm -q"). Do the same with Apache (when doing 'rpm -q' search first for 'apache', and then for 'httpd')

Once you've done that you should be able to compile PHP and Apache without any problems
