followed by the attachment in encoding. I just can't seem to make it work. any ideas

you may also use the searching facilities of this site to find many many relevant threads

and if you really want to know how emails work to the bone go to http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc
and read the following:

RFC 821, RFC 1869 and RFC 2554 for SMTP

I know how e-mail works I run my own webserver and it usually decodes e-mail just fine. I have searched the php.net site endlessly found a few things and tried them nothing worked I was wandering if anyone just had an idea how it might work

it consists of many parts which are all seperated by a specific splitter
in the example you gave this splitter is

just under this splitter every part has a few lines for headers then a blank line and then the body of the part

now when you see that crazy letters like

AAAAZQAAAT5XOEJOTVNXRAEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACAAAAAAA

this is just a hexadecimal representation of numbers
for example the first two AA leters would represent the hexadecimal number AA or the 170 in the decimal system

this is called the base64 codec

go to php.net and look for the IMAP functions!!
