imagecreatefromgif trouble

im having trouble using the function "imagecreatefromgif()". I am aware that GIF support was removed from the GD library in version 1.6 and i therefore assume this is my problem.
How do i know which version i am using and what are my options for upgrading / adding gif support?
I am currently running Mac OS 10.1.5.
I would appreciate any assitance.

make a file with this in it:

<?
phpinfo();
?>

That will display all sorts of info about your php setup and it's libraries. Under the "gd" table, you should see the version number.

Version number is "2.0 or higher"
There is no GIF support listed.
How can i enable it?

gd library greater than 1.6.0 have no supports for gif images and you cannot enable that formats. Try with imagik (Image Magik PHP extension).
I remember this graphic library supports gif formats.

Imagik (PHP extension for ImageMagik) is a native Pear module.
You can find the module at: http://pear.php.net.

I don't know if there exists a version for your Mac OS.
