i am trying to code my own discussion boards but ran into a seemingly easly problem but i'm just too stupid to figure it out..

how can i show the VERY LAST RECORD that was UPDATED/EDITED first in a list?

To give you an accurate responce, it would be helpful to know how you are storing and retrieving the discussion board information (ie, mySQL, Text file, etc.).

it will be sorting from the latest update to the 'topics' table:

heres an example with some data in the topics table:

id - gameid - topicsubject - topicstart - topictime - msgcount -lastreplyuser - lastreplytime - topicid

1 - b002 - test - rob - 1/22/2003 10:17 - 1 - rob - 1/22/2003 10:19 - 2203101725213

hopefully thats easy to read.. the top is the fields, the next line is the data in those fields

the lastreplytime is updated everytime a message for that topic is posted.... i'm running the following query:

SELECT * FROM topics WHERE gameid = '$gameid' ORDER BY lastreplytime

.. however, it is still not showing the last topic that a message was posted for.

In that case, the solution is quite simple! Just add the DESC keyword to your SELECT query:

SELECT * FROM topics WHERE gameid = '$gameid' ORDER BY lastreplytime DESC

thanks again for the help

i figured out what was wrong. i knew to put desc at the end of the query, but the date/time format i was using before was horrible... i changed it over to a 24 hour format and its working nicely now 🙂

Just remember to use LIMIT when using MySQL:

SELECT * FROM topics WHERE gameid = '$gameid' ORDER BY lastreplytime DESC LIMIT 10

Otherwise your MySQL client will retrieve all the records in the table, and thats probably what you want, especially when there have been thousands of discussions...
