...fetch mail without using imap functions?

Is it possible to write a php script to fetch mail from a mail server (I am using Merak mail server) without using php imap functions?

I can't imagine why it is such a simple question but no one answer me for a long time so I decide to find out the answer myself!
The solution is very simple - just use PHP function "fsockopen"!
