script to check if server is up?

hi!
i wondered if anybody out there knows a script, that checks the up-time of a site i.e. f the server isnt down. it should send a request every minute - or 30 secs, etc and store the collected data (date, errorcode, url, etc.) in a database - since im sure that there is a script like that out there i wanted to check with you guys if anybody knows of a piece of code like that before i start coding. especially, since i am not a cron job pro.

You could use an ICMP echo request (ping). Run a cron or AT task to make it run every so often and then put the results in a DB.

Or check out something like www.internetseer.com (I think it is free for one domain name).
