Yup, there are some pretty nasty things going round right now, that 'Synchronise your date and time now!' from Gator is one of the worst. It puts GMT.exe in your system folder which randomly displays adverts. The worst thing is that when you remove the software, the GMT file remains and keeps bringing up adverts.

Very very nasty, remember you need to accept a download trust box before it can install so double check who its from and what it does.

Yeah, I got that f***ing Gatorware when I installed Precision Time. Took me rather a lot of registry hacking to get rid of it all, and it's still hanging around on the hard drive!

...Which is a pity because Precision Time is an excellent little utility! 😃 I discovered, though, that I could simply backup the contents of the 'Program Files\PrecisionTime' folder, uninstall all the GAIN-supported crap, including all the registry entries etc, and then replace the PrecisionTime folder. And it works!

Still, I've learnt my lesson. Anything GAIN-supported can kiss my pucker!

Yup, its a nasty one alright. The new Gator Precision Time actually displays adverts pertaining to what you are looking at, on behalf of the rivals.

For example, say you were looking at an IBM site, it might bring up an advert for Novell. Sneaky tricks.

On the good side though, many many companies are now taking Gator to court over it (http://www.internetnews.com/IAR/article.php/1474911) and we should have a resolution soon.

Well done by the way, getting gatorware out, while leaving precision time intact. Some other date/time synchronisers are Atomic Time (http://www.altrixsoft.com/) and not forgetting 🙂 the time synchronise feature that comes with Windows XP (double click your time on the taskbar and go to the tab Internet Time).

Anyway, well done for getting rid of it, and to everybody else, make sure you check before you press that yes button, you never know what it could be!

Scratch all that stuff and lets get to the root of the problem here fellas. Check this out:

          http://www.sysinternals.com

(Specifically focusing on AutoRuns v2.0 for your needs to find out whats runnin on the system.. at least during startup)

To see whats in memory, Process Explorer is BEEFY. Ability to selectively close file-handles under NT/2K/XP and can see ALL PROCESSES on win9x no matter if they use the special technique to hide themselves from the normal task-manager...
