mysql bug!? or my coding?!

Very strange problem.

When every i insert text into the database (my news) and a word has a ' in it such as it's it will not post into the database because of the '

how come it doesn't save to database if a word has a '

???

wow, i never seen this before, i heard its a bug ?

how to fix?

the text row is Type: TEXT, NOT NULL

Must be something in your coding as it works fine for me.

The single quotes need to be url encoded or they will not submit to the db. Some php.ini's are set to use magic quotes which will handle most of this for you.

can you explain what i need to do? dunno much about mysql, as you can see 😉

The encoding part is all on the php side. You could use urlencode() or you could do a regexp to replace all the ' with \' then try to place the data in the DB. The other thing to do is make sure that magic_quotes are enabled in your php.ini. If you aren't using php to put the info in the DB then you need to use whatever is available from your language to change the ' into \', otherwise MySQL will choke and die.

Hmm .. magic_quotes_gpc (GET/POST/COOKIE) is on.

Use Sybase-style magic quotes (escape ' with ' ' instead of \')

nevermind:

$HTTP_POST_VARS[in] = addslashes($HTTP_POST_VARS[in]);

did the trick 🙂

Not sure if you found stripslashes() to (although I'm sure you did, both functions tend to be found together), but stripslashes() will strip the slashes that get added in when you want to echo your db fields.

For the data filed before embded into query just esacape specail characters like ' by using ereg_replace and then use it to query as follows :

$data="this isn't didn't it's like didn't make's true ";
$data = ereg_replace("'","\'",$data);
// then use it for build the query
