how to restart a database server

pages that use the databse are running slow, although other pages are as well. I have root access, how do I go in and shut down and restart the mySQL server?

What makes you think that will help?

If queries are running slwo you should optimize the database/tables/queries.

A restart will speed things up for a few seconds until the load returns and things are just as slow.

by the way, how to stop and start mysql is ofcourse explained in the mysql manual.
