Is there a readable Freetype reference out there?

I'm trying to get a better understanding of Freetype and such functions as imagettftext. The official Freetype page is a bit deep and doesn't seem to offer any info on imagettftext (and whatever other functions might be available that I don't know about).

Is there a readable document out there that anyone knows about?
