Setting passwords for MySQL server

I have apache for windows (2000) installed. Everything works fine, PHP and SQL, i even can create tables with phpmyadmin. But, currently my username is 'root' without a password.
I can see a service in windows that's started, called '../mysql/bin/mysqld-nt.exe'.
Included in the apache for win32 package is also 'Winmysqladmin' in this tool i can see my databases, but i can't change users and passwords.

How do i change my username and password and is it possible to set usernames and passwords for every single database?

I think i'm stupid, please help me........

execute c:\mysql\bin\mysql

mysql> UPDATE user SET password=password('newpassword')
WHERE user='root';
mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
mysql> exit
