autocomplete-type function, or whatever is faster

howdy! i was thinking of having a dropdown with A-Z, then having javascipt(i think?!? ASP???) refresh the page with the companies obviously beginning with that letter. my second option was to find or create a function that is exactly like the IE autcomplete function. unless i can find a way to load all the companies/phone numbers into autocomplete. so this leads me to ask a few questions. i have around 300 companies, with the first option, will the companies be held within the html, or in a database? im looking for the fastest way to get the company displayed here, thanks for any help!

You want a dropdown menu with all of your company names in? with php handling it?

yea but im going for speed here. autocomplete is fast cause the user can just type a couple letters and the company shows up. i figured a dropdown with 300+ company names would lag. i dunno, im just looking for ease and speed

I have a solution...

Firstly make sure your company names are in a db.

Here we go:

echo "<select name='com_names'>";
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result))
{
    extract($row);
    echo "<option value='$com_name'>$com_name";
}
echo "</select>";

I havnt tested it but it should work.
