File functions

If certain file priviledges such as is_file and is_dir are inaccessible - is there any way of getting round this ? (and how is it done ?)

look up chmod in the manual,

note
som hosts lets you not change the permission through HTTP.

It isn't to do with chmod - I can change it no probs using chmod($file,0777) but with no avail - I still can't use is_file and is_dir... The host is a mate of mine, so it is no big deal, and says he has configured it so they can't be used, but I have no idea how.... Apparently he did it to improve security... but do you know how it is done ?
