ok, i've got a minor problem with variables

let's say $username = "Rob"

how would i make $username not care about the casing of letters if i was do to something with this variable? hope that makes sense i dont know how to word it.

If your doing some string comparison you could alway change the case to a temp variable then do your comparison. Or you could use a PHP string function.

eg.

// to compare string x to y change to lower case
$x = "STRING";
$y = "strInG";
$tmp_x = strtolower($x);
$tmp_y = strtolower($y);
if ( $tmp_x == $tmp_y )
  echo "$x = $y";

// or you could use one of the many string comparison functions availible such as strcasecmp
// here is the example from the manuel
$var1 = "Hello";
$var2 = "hello";
if (!strcasecmp($var1, $var2)) {
    echo '$var1 is equal to $var2 in a case-insensitive string comparison';
}

ok lets try this then..

i have a script where people can login on my site. rob ROB roB rOb --- if that user name, any case, matches the password in mysql, it will allow them login.

when they create their account, they may wish to enter Rob, not rob, as the username.

Now then, how can i force it to show EXACTLY how they registered it when they login. Lets say i set the username to "Rob" but when i login i use "rob". Of course, it's going to let me log in regardless, but how can I set that session variable to EXACTLY the case "Rob" as it was entered when they registered?

Thanks again in advance for any help. This is causing some minor problems on the discussion boards I coded.

ffffffff, i figured it out

stupid me had the username being set to EXACTLY what was typed in the text input field. now, i had it take what was typed in the text input field, run a query on it, and pull the username from the database and set it, instead of the value of the text field... kinda stupid i didn't think of it before
