Running Script on demand

I tried searching for this and receivied a lot of results that were not what I was looking for. If already is a post, can someone please point me there. If not can someone help me out with my question.

The question is - I want a script to execute when another file is present. An example of what I am looking for is that a client would upload a text file. When this file is present the PHP script would execute doing what it needs to do.

if the client is uploading a text file via a form that you setup then you can simply run whatever script you want at the conclusion of your upload script. if you want a script to run whenever a client uploads a text via some other method then you can set up a cronjob to run every minute or so to see if the file is present and then take whatever action is necessary.

Yeah - it would not be via a form but an FTP upload. I thought of the cron method but was just seeing if there were any other was to see about this happening.
