Intermittent Login Problems

I was wondering if anyone running a login/members-only script has experienced inconsistent login difficulties.

Example: I developed a members-only site for a client, and in a few cases, the members were able to add their info to the database, but when they would try and login, their information could not be retrieved. The db connected fine, and I could log in fine using their username and password from my end... from 3 different computers with both Windows 98 and XP. We have explored the "allowing cookies" issues- this person has everything set up so that theoretically it should work.

I'm completely perplexed because 98% of the people are experiencing no problems. Has anyone encountered such a mystery? What haven't I thought of?

i have heard of this issue with cookies being used, maybe you should check out sessions, really easy to work with, and a lot less hassle than cookies, i have built user/members-only sections and that is how i control it

I use a combination of sessions and cookies together. I also don't embed my session id in the URL so the sessions are essentially using cookies to temporarily store the info.

However, perhaps I'll think about switching completely away from cookies though. Thanks for the input! 🙂

So the user doesn't receive the cookie or what? if this is the case and you have access to the php.ini of the server, consider setting session.use_trans_sid. That way the PHP parser will automatically add the session id to form actions, link urls etc.
