Hi,
I wanted to host my website on my own computer, but I do not know what to do about the DNS for my domain. I know there are some free ones like www.zonedit.com and www.granitecanyon.com but are there any free DNS registers to host my own DNS server? What would you guys reccommand? Thanks in advanced

That statement confuses me. If you are talking about dns server software then yes there are a few about.

Both www.zonedit.com and www.granitecanyon.com are free to use(zonedit is restricted in a few ways only 5 sites no more than 1 million dns requests). I have used zonedit.com extensively and they opperate a great service, although update times can be slightly slow some times; caching is too long.

The catch with running your own dns server is that you need 2 or more of them, most if not all domain registration companies insist on it. There are schemes to swap secondary dns servers though.

If i were you i would make sure you get a static ip address for your internet line (makes life a lot easier) and then use zonedit.com for all your dns needs.

I do have a static ip, what do you think about granite canyon? Also, if I were to run my own dns server, would you reccommand using ZoneEdit ot own dns server?

Granite canyon is essentialy the same as zonedit however zonedit seems to have a better user guide and gives help along the way. The interface for editing you zone file is also a lot nicer for zonedit. Zonedit looks as if it is run by a bigger corporation would in general provides a more reliable service. Between the two i would go for zonedit.

Running your own dns server is a hassle as i explained before, you need at least 2 servers to do this. It is easy to use zonedit to point to your webserver if you have a static ip so i stongly recommend that.

the problem i see with zone edit is that it limits the amount of hits, if i get 20 million hits a year, itll start charging me without a warning, but thanks for all the infomation, gave me alot of insight =)

Yes but if you got 20 million hits/year you probably wouldn't be running your webserver from your house!!

BTW, do you know if you need any special licences to use IIS on Win2k as a pblic webserver? thanks

Not as far as i know, however i have a feeling that the number of connections allowed, ie users connected to the webserver at any one time is 10, and it is win2k advanced server that allows either 100 or unlimited. I would have to look it up to get the precise figures though.

If you are jumping into IIS for the first time, I highly recommend that you run Apache 1.x and PHP instead. IIS, if not properly configured, exposes your computer to all kinds of vulnerabilities. And as mentioned, I believe the IIS included in Windows 2000 non-Server will only allow 10 people to visit your website at any one time.

Or better yet, cough up the $6 a month for a complete web hosting solution with 400MB of space, MySQL, PHP, etc.

A search on this board for "hosting" or "provider" will yield several $6/mo providers which people are getting mileage out of.
