Hi,
I wanted to host my website on my own computer, but I do not know what to do about the DNS for my domain. I know there are some free ones like www.zonedit.com and www.granitecanyon.com but are there any free DNS registers to host my own DNS server? What would you guys reccommand? Thanks in advanced

well, I once ran into the same issue. I wanted to add subdomains to my liking and this became a problem when using free hosts. So i run my own webserver. The program is called Simple DNS

Note that it is not free, but once u get the thing goin, u can get unlimited subdomains and u can even collect sum extra money by running DNS service for others. Chk out the site for details.

If u want to have a free host then i recommend

Everything u need to kno is in dat site. Dun hesistate if u run into problems when using Simple DNS or setting up an account with diywebserver.

thanks, i see that SimpleDNs has a 14 day trial, I might wanna try it out. By the way, if I do run my own server with a webserver such as Apache with MYSQL and PHP support, do i need to buy any additional licenses from them? If i were to really host my site, what OS would u reccomand me using? Windows or Liunux? Thanks

well i think ders 2 type of licenses for SimpleDNS, one of limits the number of domains to 25 or sumtin, the other gives u unlimited.

It doesnt matter if u use SimpleDNS to run your own webserver or jus speed up ur browsing by runnin ur own DNS.

Now as of which OS to use, I cannot say one is better than the other. Apache n PHP on linux has undergone through tests and is said to be more stable than in windows. And running a linux box will considerably reduce memory load cuz it doesnt have many resource consuming services in the background. But if ur not familiar with the Linux world, u mite find it REALLY annoying with out a proper GUI. To tell u the truth i started learnin Linuz last month. I dual boot it with XP.

So to summarize everything, if ur familar with Linux, and is planning to host a proffessional site, i recooment a Linux system. But if u like things to b easy n quick i recommend WIndows. I use XP for local development, since i dun have a second box n im not hosting ne proffessional sites.
