Refresh META Tag

Im currently using a refresh META tag to reload a page every second as part of a PHP chat room.

The problem I have is that every time the page reloads it jumps back up to the top.

I have tried using anchors to correct this but this doesnt work either.

Does anyone know a way to refresh a page without it jumping back up to the top?

I know it doesn't answer your question, but have you looked into any of the many IRC-backend Java chats?

I'm having good success with http://www.webmaster.com/products/backpack.htm

Why do you have to use setTimeout ? I just don't know, but without it, it won't scroll... !
