Fatal error - could array be the problem?!

Getting the following error message:
"Fatal error: Cannot use assign-op operators with overloaded objects nor string offsets"

The PHP file includes one rather substantial array. I tried taking a few lines out of it just in case the sheer size of the array was giving me prolems, but this made no difference.
Any ideas?

That's the problem - the error clearly isn't due to anything on the line number given, which is as follows:

$code['default'].="?><a href=/?op=news>News display</a><br>\n";

As the file is around 2100 lines long, it's kinda hard to narrow it down any further!

Well, you have to narrow it down somehow. I tried

<?
$code['default'] = 'test';
$code['default'].="?><a href=/?op=news>News display</a><br>\n";
print $code['default'];
?>

and it works beautifully...

I suspect $code itself is a string - e.g.

<?
$code = 'test';
$code['default'].="?><a href=/?op=news>News display</a><br>\n";
print $code['default'];
?>

Though I'm not in a position right now to see if that doesn't work in the same way.

My god I am such a dumbass! You got it weedpacket - trying to use a string variable with the same name as an array. Can't believe I missed that!
