Convert Uploaded Audio to Mp3?

Hello,

I am looking for some guidance in a solution to this problem.

I would like users to be able to upload audio to my site. I have decided that they should be able to upload wav and mp3. The problem is: wav is obviously way to large to store; so, I am looking for a solution that can convert the wav to mp3 and save on the server.

If anyone has an insight I would appreciate the help.

You have no control over that. The reason is because if you want to conver the WAV to MP3, then the file has to be on your server. But for the file to be on your server, it has to be uploaded, so either way, you're still uploading the WAV file. Therefore, the convertion has to be done before the upload, which you have no control over. You'll just have to ask your users nicely to convert their WAV files to MP3. Maybe point them to freeware programs that can do that and stuff...

I don't mind the user uploading the wav first. Then is there a function I could call to convert it.

You can do this to stop ppl from uploading .wav files:

       if(preg_match(".wav", $file){
          echo ".wav format is disallowed";

  } else {
      echo "You have uploaded an allowed format!";
  }

I havnt tested this if it works. Give it a whirl.

There is no built-in PHP function that does that, and I doubt anyone wrote a PHP script to do that either. I would suggest finding a command line program that can convert WAV files to MP3, and then execute that program from within PHP using exec() or system() or one of those functions.

The only way I could think of doing this is using an encoder (LAME) to convert the .wav files to .mp3 after they have been uploaded and use the system() function to call the encoder for each .wav file.

However whether you have access to the server to install this type of software is a different question. Also wouldn't doing this put alot of strain on the server? It's probably best to just prevent uploading of .wav all together.

Also file uploads are limited to whatever they can cram down the line in what? 120 seconds?
