store variables

I'm sure this is a newbie prob, I'm trying to store a variable semi-permanently so that I can call it three php pages later. Basically, I view data (page 1). If I click an edit link I am directed to a login page (page 2) where i set a cookie upon succesful login and then redirect to the edit page (page 3). However, right now, when I am redirected to the edit page I get no records returned because I have not indicated to MySQL which record I want.

I need to take the record number from the 1st page and pass it to the edit page when I get there.

you can pass it in the url, use sessions, or post it via form postings
