local fopen only enabled

I am on a shared server and they have disabled "remote" fopen (security reasons), but that fopen will work for all local files.

How do I rephrase the following so that it will work /reads as local:

$ff = fopen($ttb_alicelocation . "?input=" . urlencode($rss),"r");

where

$ttb_alicelocation =
"http://www.athlonarena.com/forums/upload/alice/src/talk.php";

Could I use something like:

$ttb_alicelocation = "/forums/upload/alice/src/talk.php"; ....ps...that is not working, maybe I'm writing it wrong?

or should I change the $ff = fopen....... to something?

I use PHP 4.2.3

You should just need the correct path to the file, as you would see it from the server's shell...do you have shell or FTP access? What does 'pwd' say? For example, my scripts might call:

 fopen("/www/myscript.php", "a");

...since you are on a 'shared server,' I imagine your path is a little more involved than that, however...I'll bet you could ask the administrators of the box what the absolute path would be, they might tell you. You might try writing a script that has an 'on purpose' parse error, or includes a non-existent file, and checking the error messages, but, to be pessimistic, I suppose that's turned off, too???

Yeah, I have sent them an email...

I have tried the path that comes up under "remote system" in my FTP.. with no luck... it then looks a bit like this:

$ttb_alicelocation = "/userxxx/home/username/public_html/forums/upload/alice/src/talk.php";

I had another one suggest the following (instead of the $ff = fopen....) I put:

shell_exec("fetch -o /forums/upload/alice \"$ttb_alicelocation?input=".urlencode($rss)."\"");

$ff = fopen("/forums/upload/alice","r");
$response = fread($ff,10000);
fclose($ff);

The error message then went away, but the output turned out greek! Like this :p
