exec a program...

Hello!
I want to exec a zip program to compress the data of my database when my program finish. But my program must work in all plataforms. so i can't suposse that a gzip must be installed.
I've thought that i can include in the .ini file of my program a line including the program to use, but i can't suposse what will be the order of the arguments (org dst/dst org) or if the program can work without using interface.
Does someone know how can i compress using a php function or mysql function?
Any idea?

I think it would be wise to install the gzip. I mean, theres conversion allmost for every platform. And basically, you need only one for the server right?

And when you install gzip, you can compress and decompress files using provided functions. Theres also other algorhytms that you can use. Search for word zip from php.net and youll find the others too.
