I Should Get A PHP Book (Subtraction)

Ok huge newbie question:
How do i subtract a number from a variable:

for instance

$number = ($number - '1200');

is what I am using now, but it doesn't seem to work.

you're dealing with numbers, so dont enclose it in quote's:

$number = $number -1200;

And yes you should get a book - will save you plenty of time waiting for people to reply to your posts!

The quote makes them a string.

a quicker way of doing the above calculation is:

$number -= 1200;
