How to setup "paths layout" ??

I have read that it is possible to configure Apache and PHP to process pages like:

in order to get better search engine results.

Could anybody help me in settig up my web server to work in this way ?

I've used this a few times on directory specific scenarios and it served it's purpose well. Amazon uses this extensively I believe.
