What kind of bitmap fonts should be used with PHP/GD?

PHP 4.3.0, bundled GD

any bitmap font I try to load with "imageloadfont" returns "cannot read font"

I did this with .bdf and .pcf fonts, but results are the same

any idea for what fonts I should use then?

TrueType? Should be bundled in PHP4, otherwise see www.freetype.org

PostScript type 1 fonts are in 'tlib' at [URL=ftp://ftp.neuroinformatik.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/pub/software/tlib]ftp://ftp.neuroinformatik.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/pub/software/tlib[/URL], last I knew.

I guess the real question is, what's the problem with the fonts you are trying?

but it's ok with TrueType fonts

The thing is I don't know what type of fonts to use as bitmap fonts - any fonts I take from /usr/X11R6/*/fonts are bitmap, but PHP raises "can't read font file", and not because the file doesn't exist but because of the "wrong" font format
