I can't copy (upload) a GD file!

$thumb = "http://www.site.com/gd_resize.php?image=1";

copy($thumb, "/images/test.jpg");

http://www.site.com/gd_resize.php?image=1

this will display in a browser, but GD fails to follow the path to the image and upload. Doh!
