setting and getting a variable trough a user action sorta thing

I'm not completely sure how to describe this,
but i know it can be done.

what i mean is that somone presses for instance a link button.
and then a variable get's set and the php script responds to this by showing diffrent data.

what i'm practicly trying to build is a all in 1 file site.
with all the stuff that would go into the main part of the site.
(news, downloads, info, etc..)
into php functions that it would spit out if the var was set.

this var should be set when a user presses a link on the little menu part.

i think it is that [url]http://...../index.php?var=[/url]"news"
thing you see sometimes. (clueless newbie here)

i have already set up all my other scripts, but i just couldn't find this bit of information.

any information why i shouldn't throw it in one file is appriciated too.
(since i have a dark down feeling that that isn't the thing too do.)
(but i hate working with frames. i personaly thing there ugly)

still working it out a bit.

i basicly have this now in my menu.

  <a href=./index.php?section=news>news</a>
  <a href=./index.php?section=art>scripts</a>

and in the function main() i have this.

if ($section == 'news') { news(); }
elseif ($section == 'art') { art(); }
}
?>

(yes i know i should realy make my variables local and globel and stuff. and then give them in the fuction. but i would rather first scrawl before i run.

bad thing is though. it's not working.
