does anyone know of some code or class even that can extract a zip file, rename it's contents (images) and put it into a folder all neat and tidy? Something to make my image gallery uploads really really simple.

Check out chapter 110 of the PHP manual, ZIP File Functions.
You'll need the ZZIPlib loaded, but it can be done.
