win2K NB-Question

I resently upgraded from win98 SE to win2K and I've had a few problems with configuring php, apache, and MySQL on my new OS.

By now Ive succeded in getting my localhost/index.php working, MySQL is running, phpAdmin works - I receive lots of warnings (which is "ok") BUT what really bothers me is things like:

"Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)"

Is this a simple question of editting in my.ini or htdocs.conf (for the apache server), or php.ini ?

btw: I also upgraded to the new php-version - could that be the source to my problems?

The warning you are getting comes from phpmyadmin. It is telling you that you have no security in MySQL and is accessing using root without a password. You should simply give root a password and make sure you put that password in the config.inc.php

Ok, now that's dealt with but my config-files must still be in some kind of disorder.
Still the most simple scripts won't run - although phpinfo.php works fine!?

The uttermost simple php-script like this doesn't work:

Use this:

if($_POST[name]){ 
echo "Hi $name, bla bla!"; 
}

Since your form method is post. This is just a matter of register_globals being off, which I would sugget you leave of and use the predefined arrays: $_GET, $POST, $SERVER, $_COOKIE, etc.

When I run the file: http://localhost/name.php
I receive the following 2 messages:

Notice: Use of undefined constant navn - assumed 'name' in ...\apache group\apache\htdocs\name.php on line 5

Notice: Undefined index: name in ...\apache group\apache\htdocs\name.php on line 5

and with the: "SUBMIT YOUR NAME: [ ]" [empty field]

When I then SUBMIT a name in the textbox I get this:

Notice the white space where the variable goes ("Hi , how...")

Sorry I had an error in my code last time.

if($_POST['name']){ 
echo "Hi $_POST[name], bla bla!";

Thanx 4 trying - It still just produces a white space in:
"Hi , how..." (same with 'PHP_SELF' instead of filename)

btw. I now tried to uninstall php, apache, and MySQL - removing all conf-files and installing the older PHP-4.2.2 version, reinstalled apache 1.3.26.
=> the warnings/notices are of but the product remains the same => no variable-name ...

I tested your exact script with the change I posted above and it worked fine.

I'm not having any doubts that the script works (should work) I'm only concerned about what doesn't work on my OS.
I don't really believe the problem resides within my php or apache config-files any longer - it must be elsewhere - meaning win2K... I guess.
Do you have any experience using win2K with apache-php?
I don't know where else to direct this issue.

Actually I tested the script on my work computer which is Win2K, Apache 2.0.44 and PHP 4.3. Did you use the binary/zip install for php?

I used the zip - Then configured php.ini (in the 'winnt' folder) to suit my directory structure.
I altered the httpd.conf in the ../apache/conf directory to suit my php-install.
The phpinfo() command works fine - even small outputs like date-handling:
=> echo( date("l, F dS Y.") )

combined with textvars runs smoothly - only not when using Form handling (POST, GET), passing variables to another file or same file produces blank output...
