PHP_AUTH question

I am creating a login for someone that wants a popup login rather than a plain form. Never used the server authentication scheme before, I don't have access the the Apache config. files on my host...but I was wondering basically whether I can still use this because of that, and how...and also can I mix in a MySQL query to the usage of the PHP authentication with that popup box? Or are there any other ideas that will utilize a popup that can call a script to run through a db for username and password when hitting a login button?

for the same effect, with this you can kill the address bar/toolbar etc...and generally make it look like a windows popup authentication window...nice thing is you can also use ssl to make the password login secure if you wanted to...

or perhaps a java applet to do the same thing...
