limiting the size jpeg images when uploading.

I'm using php and mysql. I have a site where members can upload their photo to the site. I have no problem with this part. I'm able to limit the type of image they upload to only a jpeg. My problem is when I try to limit the size of the image I seem to be messing up somewhere. Can someone give me an example of how to limit the size or length and width of the image that is uploaded. Thanks in advance.
