switch vs. if elseif

if elseif else ... could be replace by switch.

but switch is only for the "equal condition = ". for the greater or smaller condition > or <" i will still need to use if elseif ?

such as

i want to see if a number $total fall in which of the following ranges.

1-10
11-30
30-80
80-100

i still have to use if else if statments, regularly speaking, right?

Yes but you can do it using a switch statement though. It may not be as accurate. But it can work.

not sure that you are, but if you are you can use sql in your database queries to figure that out before you spit anything out to the screen, may not work in your case, but it may, a little faster and less taxing on the server than php if you are using large quantities or information

elseif's can become difficult to read. Another approach is to use a function.

function get_range($n)
{
  if (($n > 0)  && ($n <= 10)) return 1;
  if (($n > 10) && ($n <= 30)) return 2;
...
  /* Not found */
 return 0
}

You could also put the range limits in an array.
