1.5 weeks same problem with php and MySql

Well i have read pretty much everthing out there on getting php and MySQL to work together and still no go. have read all the things on this board too. The problem is i have installed php, mysql and apache from the redhat 8 cd when i installed the system.

PHP just refuses to talk with MySQL. how do i go about fixing this. I mean there must be a method without having to uninstall the packages i have and Downloading more. I mean if they dont work together my default there should be a way of turning this on.

All files are installed into their default directories. and am running redhat 8.

If you search my posts you will see that I have answered this question at least once a month for the last 6 months or so.

You need to install the PHP-MySQL rpm. It is on the installation CDs and it is also available for download from RedHat. If you have the CDs you can boot from disk 1 and install the rpm from there, can't remember exactly where it is.

i wish it was that easy!

the thing is it was installed from the cd. and by default it is not configured to run with mysql.. am right? well i went into the httpd.conf and added

the lines

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php .phtml

and checked the LoadModule php4_module modules/libphp4.so was there. it was not. so i added it. then the httpd restarts with errors saying its already started so skipping. this is because its in the php.conf file. so its not that.

As i said i have read pretty much everthing and have read all those posts you and others have made.

Tell you what - dont be suprised if you read in the papers that a bloke commits suicide over redhat 8 apache, php and mysql. I wish i was kidding but after 1.5 weeks i am going NUTS!!! i cant take this anymore... i need to get programming, time is running out and i am stuck!

What output do you get if you run an info script -

Do you have an IM client - what's ur handle?

or you could just reconfigure php with mysql support

got the screen if thats what you mean. PHP version 4.2.2

and further down the page it says mysql and in the table it states that its enabled

what happens when you try to establish a connection?

Do you get an invalid function message??

Just run -

mysql_connect('your_host','your_user','your_pass') or die('MySQL error: ' . mysql_error());

actually did that just as you came up with the suggestion. got the blank page. not suprising seeing as the DB is empty. but this still does not explain why phpMyAdmin gives me Not Found error on the functions i select. ?? totaliy confused

one other thing. if i dont set any passwords on mysql and try to run http://localhost/phpmyadmin/index.php i get a page with :

cannot load mysql extensions

This means that there is nothing wrong with your Apache/MySQL/PHP installation.

I can't give you advice on phpMyAdmin as I "don't/won't/never" use it (I'm not a fan). I either use the command line or sometimes I use "MySQL-Front" (a superb win client for MySQL).

ok thanks for your time. at least all the reading and changing the config files got MySQL working. and now i know its phpmyadmin thats giving me the headache. progress... am sure this is not the last you will be hearing from me. no probs with the programming side of things.. just the dam set-up...

Try MySQL Control Center(linux) - don't know if it is any good but it might be quicker than trying to figure out what's wrong with your phpMyAdmin install.
