starting and stopping application from php?

is it possible to start & stop an application from php on linux?

if so, could some one please give me an example?

It's possible to do at least two things:

1. Use php to make a suexec() call to a <program>.
2. Use php as a commandline interpreter (a la shell) and script
   in it instead of, say, bash (yes, God forbid I should actually say that to a Linux guy.)

I'm afraid I only use PHP for web scripting though. Examples, I point you to the manual at php.net, I guess...
