How does phpBuilder do it?

I'm pretty sure this has been answered before, but my searches were unsuccesful :o

I like to know how phpBuilder, or other for that matter, do the parsing.
AS you know if you type something between the

 here, the result will be colored, [B] makes the output bold....

Any ideas?

i believe it uses regular expressions to search and replace the instances of the bb tags (i.e. with the HTML tag <b>)
