Reading a file to a string?

Hi,
I've been looking around the PHP manual for a function that reads any file into a single string.
I want to do this so I can search and replace a number of things before submitting that file to screen. I don't want to edit the file though.
If anyone knows of any way to do this, it would be greatly appreciated!
