Matrix Levels?

ok i have my sponsors as SP in my mysql database... do i just need to connect to the database and do a query and return the number of colums that match the username of the current user like... my matrix is a 3 X 12.... so say.... im jackf and i have 1, 2, and 3 under me... would i just return a query with all colums that match my SP? dah i confused myself... this is confusing

SELECT * FROM $table WHERE blah = 'blah'

change 'blah' to whatever you need to match... if you show the structure of the table it would be easier for me to formulate a query for you.

Fields,

"email"
"firstname"
"lastname"
"username"
"password"

"SP"

sp = sponsors username

try something like this:

$result = @mysql_query("SELECT * FROM users WHERE users = 'sp'");
    while ($row = mysql_fetch_row($result)) {

$name = $row[1];

}

does the user have an ID I assume? If so change WHERE users = 'sp' to WHERE id = 'sp'

ahh boy...
i get a mysql_fetch_row() supplied argument is not a valid mysql resource link error....

I need to know how to fix my matrix level to allow, starting on line 1, 3 users, line 2, 9 users, line 3, 27 users and so on... for 12 levels... but i have no idea where to even start.
