Numbering rows in a table

Hello all,

I am extracting a list of teams from a database ordered by the standings. I want the first column to indicate the rank, ie, 1 for the team in first place, 2 for the one in second etc. While this sounds like a simple thing, I've not be able to figure out how to do this.

What's the trick I'm missing?

just off the top of my head, you could try something like this

$query = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM your_table ORDER BY wins DESC"); // select records in order of most wins

$rank = "1"; // the first record is in first place

while($row = mysql_fetch_array($query)) {
   // display results here

echo "Rank " . $rank; // echo what rank this record is

$rank += "1"; // add 1 to the rank for the next cycle

}

glad to hear it. Everytime i write code for someone off the top of my head like that, I worry that I made some stupid mistake and didn't realize it.
