What is exact syntax to put a variable in SET colname?

I want put a session variable that increases by one (++_SESSION['pick'}) everytime the update record is run. (after which a refresh on the page is performed.

$updateSQL = sprintf("UPDATE db2003 SET pick1=%s WHERE login=%s",...

How do I stick the session variable where 'pick1' is above?

I suppose you just have to raise the value of the variable by one and then update the database.

$pick = $_SESSION['pick']++;
$sql = "UPDATE db2003 ST pick1=$pick WHERE login=%s";

Sorry maybe I haven't explained well enough. I want the update to perform:

Update pick1=%s%

then next time around

Update pick2=%s%

then

Update pick3=%s%

and so on.

I have ten questions that come up one at a time through where the id_no. increments each time submit is hit.

Then the next question comes up, but then I want the 'next question same form' to update the next 'pick' column in a database.
