Looking for intermediate users guide to User Logging

I know that alot of this information is discussed individually, but not all of it is covered and it would make a great article...

I am familiar with databases and accessing them and so forth but what I would like to see is a intermediate-advanced discussion of a user logging system (fields to use, features to keep in mind, etc). that would include things like how to restrict users from pages unless they are logged in, showing all users that are on-line, account validation through email using PHP's mail system, deletion of unvalidated accounts after X hours, setting up CRON (perl-talk for script scheduling since I don't know the PHP equivilent), etc.

I assume that something like this may already exist...if so, please send me the URL. Otherwise...anyone feel like typing???
