Dynamic sites and articles

Hi,

I am wondering if someone can clear something for me.
I see a lot of sites (like phpbuilder) where in their index page have a lot of articles, with a short description and a link to the full story. This link usually has an id attached to it at the end.

What I would like to clear is whether the article is actually stored in the database or if the database just stores the path where the article resides in the filesystem.

Additionally are all these articles being administered through a CMS, maintained somewhere in the web tree?

regarding the id... I don't know what they do here at phpbuilder, but it's very often a reference to a record id in a database.
