.htaccess? .htpasswd??

Does anyone know how to password protect with .htacces??
If the do could they give me the tutorial or guide me in the right direction? Like.. for when you put in the login things on your site.. to make it check to see if the variables that they put in match .htacces.. or .htpasswd??
