Selecting date range when date is MySQL format

I'm trying to retrieve all results for a given week from a table. I've defined unix timestamps for the Sunday and Saturday that mark the beginning and end of the week as $sunday and $saturday. The dates in my table are stored as MySQL format dates (yyyy-mm-dd). So what I want to say is something like "SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(date)>=$sunday AND UNIX_TIMESTAMP(date)<=$saturday" - but that gives me a syntax error.

Is there a better way to do this, or should I just use unix timestamps in my table and forget converting them while doing the select?

What about the fact that the dates have dashes in them - doesn't MySQL's date format have hyphens in it - e.g. 2002-02-04?

Other than that, I guess I can convert my unix timestamp values for the beginning and end of the week to MySQL format.

But it's not too late to change everything to unix - maybe that'd just be easier.
