Wanting to get started with PHP

Well, as I am a completely and utterly clueless newb to PHP, I decided I would ask a few questions regarding as to how I might get started in learning it.

1) Can I run my PC as a server for PHP and MySQL, so that I can learn to do so without registering a web server?

2) Should I learn any other languages before attempting to learn PHP? (I already know HTML, JScript, and CSS quite well, and at this time am learning C++ and Java)

3) Is there a particular platform on which it is easier to make, edit, and publish documents in PHP?

I do have several books at my disposal for learning the basics to PHP, but none of them explains these points. I would be most grateful for any help anyone can offer. Thanks.🙂

Yes, you can run your PC as a server and have mySQL on it at the same time.

It does not matter if this is Windows or Linux.

If you have a Windows operating system, do the following:

1) www.php.net
Download the Windows distributions and follow the readme documents very closely

2) www.mysql.com
Download the Windows distributions and install

3) www.apache.org
Download the Apache 1.3 or 2.x httpd server for Windows
