ereg_replace help with wild card

I have this code.

$courses = " ACCT 111 BMAT 182 COMM 151 MGMT 161 MICO 191 Winter ACCT 113 BMAT 183 COMM 175+ MICO 193 MKTG 171 Accounting Major* Fall ACCT 211 ECON 201 FINA 254 SGMA 395 "

$str = ereg_replace("$name ", $name ,$courses);

where $name = ACCT 111,BMAT 182, COMM 151 ... ect.

I need to check for a wild card cases.
For example

ACCT 111, ACCT 111+,ACCT 111*, ACCT 111 , will all be accepted and changed.

what exactly do you want? only the ones listed in your examples, or just any character, and only one or may there be several?

I switched your example to preg_replace:

// asterisk, plus or space
$str = preg_replace("/$name[*+\s]*<br>/", "<b>$name</b><br>" ,$courses); 

// same but only one
$str = preg_replace("/$name[*+\s]?<br>/", "<b>$name</b><br>" ,$courses); 

// any characters
$str = preg_replace("/$name.*?<br>/", "<b>$name</b><br>" ,$courses);

EDIT: oh, I forgot: when you need the complete $name + something in your replacement argument, put it in parenthesis and use $1 instead of $name in the 2nd argument.
