sending mail from windows98 using appache server

I've got Apache and php set-up on my local machine which is a win98SE for testing purposes...

When I try to use php's mail function it reports that it cannot find the mail server. I believe this is because Apache on windows does not have a mail server. Am i correct?

Does anyone know a fix for this? Could I download a smtp server onto my machine and point the php to that instead of Apache? Would this cause problems with Apache? or am I talking nonsense..

You are correct in that W98SE does not have a mail server. And Apache is a Web Server only.

I do not use Windows as a development environment, so I am sorry I dont have a working solution. But you definatly are on the right track.

Maybe upgrade your machine to W2K, may have to have the server version here too.

W2K does not have a mail server either (not even the server version). What I did is setting php.ini so PHP mail points to my ISP SMTP server:

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = smtp.yourisp.com

It works great
